Why am I here?
It seems like a lifetime ago…my 700-mile commute to Zurich on a Monday morning, back to Buckinghamshire on a Friday, and now my office is a mere 10m stroll across the house.
I have asked many questions in the recent months about the world, life and why I am here sitting at my desk on endless Zoom calls, in my converted office which was once my son’s bedroom; it’s a little different now.
I have made many deliberate choices in my life; where to live, who to marry (and she said yes), family and pets. As for my career, I did have a plan once that seemed to make sense but it was short-term focussed and without purpose.
About 10 years ago, I realised I needed to be clear about my meaningful purpose, my ‘why’.
I knew the ‘what’ and worked hard to achieve it. I am motivated by not failing which is great as there is never a limit, but bad as there is never a limit. My many managers, some good, some incredible, and some that I learnt to never emulate, have frequently shaped my choices.
Then it came to me, like a slap in the face with a wet fish. My ‘why’ is to lead; in fact to be the best leader I can be, to help people to realise their potential, driven by the same values I have as a father of my two children of whom, like any parent, I am immensely proud. My purpose is to lead and to help as many people as I can to realise their potential. If I can continue to do that and help resolve complex people and business challenges, then I am set.
To turn this into reality, I chose 3 guiding principles, that I follow, to help me decide where I want to work, and what’s important to me:
- The company – vision, plans, portfolio, purpose
- The role – the more complex and challenging and difficult the better
- The people – culture, values. This is the most important one; it has to work, no compromise.
I have had many rewarding roles in my career so far, not least with Vifor Fresenius Medical Care Renal Pharma, as CEO, and now my roles are leader, mentor, coach, strategy builder, business developer; some with compensation, others just because it’s the right thing to do.
I am also delighted to be working with IE, an inspiring and fast-growing Launch Excellence company, based in the UK. I chose to work with the IE team because it fits my ‘why’. Their ‘one team’ mentality, their courage and passion for what they do, their clear purpose, audacious growth plans and pharmaceutical clients who love what they do. I am proud to be part of their story, as Managing Director, to help shape, guide and lead the way forward.
I am crystal clear why I am here now and why I do what I do. As for the rest of life, the world, COVID…..that is much less clear.
